SKILLED NURSING FACILITIES (SNF’S)

Skilled nursing facilities (SNF’s) are also referred to as rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, convalescent homes, post-acute and long term care facilities. These terms are often used interchangeably. Skilled nursing facilities have both short-term rehabilitation, long term care and at times respite care. Under Medicare guidelines, for short- term rehab, a person requiring rehabilitation must have a 72 hour qualifying in-patient hospital stay before being admitted to a SNF. In addition, Medicare has criteria for the length of stay for rehabilitation. Medicare and/ or supplemental insurance, like Blue Cross, Blue Shield, AARP, etc… does not pay for long term care only short-term rehabilitation. Long term care is typically paid for by either Medi-Cal, private funds or long term care insurance if the criteria is met.
