ASSISTED LIVING FACILITIES
Assisted Living Facilities, also referred to as Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFE) or “Board & Cares”, provide 24 hour (on-site) non-medical personal care. Their typical services include: personal assistance with dressing, toileting, transferring, medication management, meal preparation, laundry, housekeeping, and assistance with arranging medical appointments. Some will specialize in memory care for those who suffer from a form of dementia such as Alzheimer’s Disease. They come in different sizes and floor plans ranging from 6-bed homes to apartment-style communities. Assisted living facilities are private pay (Medicare & Medi-Cal do not pay for these types of facilities).

Special Tips!
All Assisted living facilities/Residential Care facilities are private pay, meaning the cost is out-of-pocket. Long term care insurance also can cover part of the cost, if assisted living is covered in your plan. Medicare, supplemental/private insurance and Medi-Cal (except in certain counties) do not pay for these types of care facilities.
- The VA has a benefit called Aid & Attendance for war time veterans and widows of wartime veterans that may help cover some of the costs. Call the Veterans Service Office at (530) 225-5616 to see if you meet the qualifications.
- Prior to admission a Tuberculosis Test and a Physician’s Report for Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (Form 602A) are required.
- Health conditions prohibited in assisted living facilities include; feeding tubes, IV’s, stage 3 or deeper pressure wounds (bed sores), Tracheostomies, and contagious infections such as MRSA, C.Diff, Tuberculosis, VRE and COVID-19. These conditions must be resolved prior to admission.
- Ask about physicians and physician’s assistants who may make home- visits to the care homes if needed.
